Celebrate Our Freedom, Thank our Veterans!

Get your red, white and blue ready! Wednesday, July 3rd will be the largest Independence Day Celebration held in Historic Apalachicola. Last year fireworks returned to the riverfront and people lined up for miles; up and down Water Street, along Highway 98 and even across the river in Eastpoint! This year looks to be even better. The Historic Apalachicola Main Street Program in partnership with the City of Apalachicola, area businesses and community organizations will be hosting the afternoon of celebration.

“It is exciting to see how it all has grown since the simple bicycle parade organised by local business owners 10 years ago. I am proud to see our Main Street organization take the lead and bring fireworks back to Apalachicola.” said Joe Taylor, original parade organizer and Main Street Board member. “I like that we have always celebrated on July 3rd, it is like Independence Eve. Our community and visitors get two days of fireworks, one in Apalach and another on St. George Island, Carrabelle or Port St. Joe. More fun for everyone”.

Festivities begin at 5pm with music, food and childrens activities in Riverfront Park. From there, the schedule is simple. If you want to be in the Red, White and Blue parade, go to Lafayette Park at 6:30. Those who choose to watch the parade can do so from Water Street between Battery Park and Riverfront Park from 7 to 7:30 pm. At 7:30 pm gather for the Ice Cream Social in Riverfront Park. Just before dusk there will be a special tribute to our Country’s Veterans featuring the Hillside Community Choir. A the fireworks begin just after dusk. Music will continue until 11 pm.

Schedule:

5 PM - Music, food and childrens activities in Riverfront Park

6:30 PM - Line-up and decorate for Red, White and Blue Parade in Lafayette Park

The Red, White and Blue Parade will feature placards recognizing Veterans who who are honored by the parade. Please encourage veterans to participate, or you may honor a veteran by carrying their name in the parade. Placards and decorating supplies will be provided at Lafayette Park by Franklin’s Promise Coalition and community volunteers. If you have questions about the parade call 653-3930.

The Ice Cream Social will be hosted by our hometown Piggly Wiggly. Come to Riverfront Park and share a cold ice cream ….. with chocolate syrup and sprinkles if you want! There will be three ice cream stations set up while you enjoy live music and the company of old and new friends.

At 8:30 we ask all of our Veterans, both locals and visitors, to gather on the dock to recognize their contributions to the freedoms we all share. There will be a brief presentation and performance by the Hillside Community Choir. Then the fireworks will highlight the evening.
