Harold Frontz INTRODUCTION TO PLEIN AIR PAINTING

Tuesday, November 12 to Friday, November 15, 9AM to 4 PM Daily

This workshop is ideal for oil and acrylic painters of all levels who would like to develop their Plein air painting skills.  The course emphasizes five important principles in creating an outdoor painting including:

  • How to design a painting using the Golden Mean and Steelyard techniques.
  • How to quickly and accurately sketch in the major elements of the composition with attention to correct perspective, shape, and proportion.
  • How to create strong tonal qualities that provide substance to the painting.
  • How to mix and apply clean colors using the color properties of hue, value, temperature, and intensity.
  • How to apply the paint with a variety of brush strokes that indicate direction, shape, and form.

A portion of each workshop day is devoted to demonstrating these important techniques and handouts are designed to illustrate methods for gaining personal competence.  The workshop will focus on and provide participants with ample opportunities to paint a variety of themes commonly found on the Florida coast including clouds, boats, shore birds, beach scenes, man-made structures, etc. During the workshop, Harold will also demonstrate and emphasize the Alla prima (from the Italian meaning first effort) painting method that uses a minimum of bold, confident brush strokes to create a “painterly” work of art in one setting.  This technique is ideal for studio as-well-as Plein air painting. In the event of inclement weather, a spacious, well-lighted studio will be provided and students will paint from photographs or other reference materials.  In suitable weather, workshop sessions will be held outdoors at various locations in the Apalachicola area that will provide a variety of subjects designed to assist participants in developing new, or enhancing existing painting skills. Cost, $350.00 per student, $200 deposit due with registration.

HAROLD FRONTZ PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOP

Materials List for Oil or Acrylic Painters

  1. Drawing paper or sketchpads at least 6”X 8” and 80 pounds weight (I suggest Strathmore brand).
  2. Assorted sizes of small canvases or canvas boards for painting (e.g., 6”X8”, 8”X10”, 9”X12” and 11”X14”).  I suggest smaller sizes as students will be practicing techniques, not necessarily trying to complete finished paintings.
  3. A drawing pencil (2B), a quality soft eraser, and a pencil sharpener.
  4. Painting kit (may be oil-based oils, water-based oils, or acrylics).  I strongly suggest that students use ARTIST-GRADE paints and not student-grade paints (examples of student-grade paints are: Winton, Academy, Georgian, etc.).  My suggested list of basic colors includes a warm and a cool of the primary colors, four convenience colors, and white as follows:
  • Ultramarine Blue                     Cobalt Blue
  • Cadmium Red Deep                Cadmium Red Medium
  • Cadmium Yellow Light           Cadmium Lemon
  • Burnt Sienna                           Cadmium Orange
  • Yellow Ochre                          Veridian
  • Titanium White

NOTE: it is perfectly acceptable if students choose to use a minimal palette.  If so, I recommend: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Light and Titanium White.  Students will be assisted in mixing the required colors if they request help.

  1. Brushes (two each of #2, #4, #6, and #8, and a rigger brush for calligraphy).  The student may choose the brush type they are most comfortable with or an assortment of each type (i.e., filbert, flat, or bright; I do not suggest round brushes for this workshop).  I suggest bristle brushes rather than nylon.  Note that rigger brushes are typically made from an inexpensive hair or synthetic fiber.
  2. Odorless paint solvent for oil paints.
  3. Paper towels and trash bags.
  4. A ruler at least 12” long.
  5. Several photographs of coastal scenes or subjects for painting references; students will paint outside when weather permits.
  6. L-shaped paper or cardboard croppers for photographs or a view finder if painting outside.
  7. Field easel suitable for use inside or outside.
  8. Pad of paper for taking notes.
  9. Binoculars to assist with viewing demonstrations.
  10. Old frames to place completed paintings in.

Students are welcome to contact the instructor prior to the class meeting dates if there are questions about the class teaching methods, supplies, etc.  He can be reached by telephone most evenings after 7:00 P.M. or by email anytime.

Hello Art Friends, I will not be teaching art (at school) this summer, if you are interested in a one or two day workshop, just let me know. I have enough art supplies booklets, and canvas for 4 or 5 people, at this time. It would be great to see your beautiful city. Susan Turner 256-379-3457
